Fire safety tips
Here are some safety tips to protect you and your family from the dangers of fire and smoke inhalation in the home.
Fitting fire doors to every room in the house means that you are increasing your chance of escape in the event of a fire. Fire doors are available, like FireGuard, that are tested to provide 30 minutes fire protection. Homeowners can choose these as a direct replacement to standard internal doors, providing them with greater peace of mind that they are protecting their home and their family. These doors are the same thickness as standard doors, so do not require the door frame to be changed , as is the case with traditional fire doors. They are also available in a wide range of door designs including; Moulded, Foil Veneer effect and Real Wood Veneer , so no one would know they are fire doors, until a fire occurs.
- Get into the habit of closing doors at night. Make a bedtime check, which includes making sure that if you have fire doors fitted to bedrooms that they are closed at night, so they can do their job properly in the event of a fire.
- Make sure everyone in your home knows how to escape if there is a fire. Put together a fire action plan, so that all members of the family are aware of where to find the keys for doors and windows.
- Most fire-related incidents start in the kitchen. Take extra care when cooking with hot oil and do not leave young children alone in the kitchen. It is safer to use a deep fat fryer than a chip pan, so it is worth investing in one!
- Never leave lit candles in rooms that nobody is in or in rooms where children are on their own. Make sure candles are in secure holders on a surface that does not burn and they are located away from any materials that could burn.
- Make sure cigarettes are stubbed out properly, disposed of carefully and that you never smoke in bed. More people die in fires caused by smoking than in fires caused by anything else. Keep matches and lighters where children cannot see or reach them too.
- Don't overload electrical sockets. Remember one plug for one socket, as this can constitute a fire hazard.
- Put a reminder of what to do in a fire in a really obvious place where it can be seen regularly, reminding members of the family what to do. It is a good idea to leave the home address near the phone in case a younger member of the family needs to ring the emergency services.
- Don’t leave the television or other electrical appliances on standby, as the built up charge has been known to start a fire. Always switch off appliances completely and unplug when not in use.
Research has shown that 91% of people do not consider it likely that there will be a fire in their home. However, every year there are over 55,000 accidental house fires attended by Fire and Rescue Services across the UK and an estimated 280,000 unreported house fires.
