Top Tips When Choosing Internal Doors

Tip one
Select the right material
It is vitally important to select the right material for your internal door. Timber is a popular choice, as it complements the trend towards natural materials in the home, such as wood-effect floors and timber furnishings. Many homeowners find that timber feature doors enhance the aesthetics and add value to their property. Styles like the Oak Mackintosh inspired range add a contemporary twist to a classic style and its elegant glazing also allows light between rooms.
Tip two
Choose a style to complement the home
It may sound obvious, but it is important to choose a door that complements the style of the property. If the house is contemporary in style, flush doors, such as the Foil Veneer finish doors are very popular and in keeping with the sleek, modern look. There are three different hardwearing, wood-effect finishes and come with glazed options to enhance natural light between rooms.
Panel doors are still very popular for traditional homes, as are over veneer feature doors, such as the White Oak Oregon and White Oak Aston range. Feature doors offer an authentic timber appearance, but because they are manufactured using engineered timber, they are better able to cope with the fluctuations in temperature caused by modern central heating systems, so will not warp or twist. There are some beautiful real wood veneered doors available at the moment, which are indistinguishable from solid timber doors and can easily be matched to both light and dark timber finishes used in the home.
Tip three
Choose sustainable timber doors.
Make sure the timber door you choose are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody certified. This ensures that the timber originates from well-managed forests, with strict reforestation programmes.
As timber is the only truly sustainable material, taking carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow and locking it up in your timber door means you are doing your bit for the environment too.
Tip four
In case of emergency
Always choose a fire door for your kitchen, as this is the most common area where blazes start. Fire doors fitted in the home usually have a 30 minute fire rating – which simply means that they have been tested and prevent the spread of fire and spoke through the door for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Doing this could just make the difference, giving you and your family those valuable extra minutes to escape from a blaze. Wherever possible, we recommend fitting fire doors throughout a property, as this enhances the safety of you and your family even further.
In order to make fire doors more accessible and easier to fit, we now offer a 35mm FireGuard™ door, which is unique in the industry as it means it can be used as a direct replacement to an existing non-fire rated door without having to change the frame.
When buying fire doors, always check that the door has a BWF-CERTIFIRE label, which demonstrates that it has been manufactured in a quality assessed production facility
Tip five
Ironmongery is important
Choose ironmongery to complement the style of the door. If your chosen door features clean lines and a contemporary design, then a simple, modern style of handle, without decorative detail would work best. If your preferred door style is more traditional, with maybe a panel design or mouldings, then a more classic handle style, either with a wrought iron effect or an intricate design would be a better choice.
Tip six
Call the Pro's!
We always advise customers to use the services of a professional to install a door. Door installation is quite a skilled job and if you have invested in good quality internal timber doors, it makes sense to have the job done correctly. We have an approved list of installers which can be located by entering your postcode into the 'find an installer' section of our website www.jeld-wen.co.uk, alternatively ask your builders merchant when you buy your doors for a recommended local installer.
Tip Seven
Create a suited look throughout the home
Often it is choosing a new entrance door that leads homeowners to also update their internal doors. This also sets the tone for the rest of the home and a well chosen set of internal and matching external doors adds value and distinctiveness.
Many homeowners choose a glazed entrance door and complement this with glazed internal doors that enhance the style and help create a light and airy living space throughout the home. Internal sliding folding doors are very popular too as they mean homeowners can open up their living space but have the flexibility to keep a room divided when they wish to do so. Known as the "Room Fold Plus", this type of door maximises the amount of light in the home and buyers have the choice of
JELD-WEN's most popular door styles including white oak shaker, primed shaker and moulded glazed.
